Dear Toni,
I want to move to a different state for better career advancement. My family is shocked that I even want to move away from them and are calling me selfish. I now have some family members mad at me and I haven’t even left yet. This is my life and I now feel at a crossroad and I’m not sure what to do. Suggestions?

Dear S,
One thing I do want to point out that you said is that it is YOUR life. You are the only one who lives your life. You have to make decisions that work for YOU. Of course, I would consider what others have to say and it’s very nice you have a family that doesn’t want you to leave. However, the choice is yours.
I moved away from my family a few years ago but that was to follow my Navy husband. Our plan was to live 3,000 miles away for four years with the intent of going back. In this time, the housing had skyrocketed and we might be priced out to move back home so we are keeping options open.
My daughter is also looking to move out of state because cost of living is so high in our home state. It would hurt to go back with her not there but this is what I told her…… Go!!! Life is short. Live it the best you can. Do what you want in life and follow your goals and dreams. You get one life and you need to live it fully. If you don’t like it then you can move back home. If you do like it then I will have to come visit.
The point is, no matter how hard it is and how much you and family miss each other, you need to do what’s best for you. That’s why they have cars, trains, and planes. You need to live your life how it works for you. But I get your family’s concern, it hurts being away and not being able to see my kids and grandkids. All of my family, because I miss them so much. But I don’t regret moving here. I have learned a lot and if we go back home, I’m much better for it.
